What the battery report actually tells you
Every used EV listing mentions battery health. Few explain how the number was generated. A dealership printout showing "92% state of health" might come from the car's own battery management system — which can be optimistic — or from a third-party scan tool that reads individual cell voltages. The second is more useful. Ask which tool produced the report. If the seller cannot tell you, treat the percentage as a rough guess.
Degradation is not linear. Most packs lose 2–3% in the first year, then settle into 1–1.5% annually. A 2019 model at 85% is normal. The same number on a 2022 is a red flag. Request the raw data: cell voltage spread at full charge, minimum cell voltage under load, and the number of DC fast-charge cycles logged. A tight voltage spread (under 0.03 V) across all modules matters more than the summary percentage.
Winter range in the Lower Mainland
Published WLTP or EPA figures assume 20°C. At 0°C, expect 25–35% less usable range. At -5°C with the heater on, a 350 km rated car delivers 220–240 km in mixed driving. The drop comes from two places: slower electrochemical reaction in the pack, and cabin heating drawing 3–5 kW continuously. Pre-conditioning while plugged in recovers 15–20 km by warming the battery before you leave.
Seat and steering-wheel heaters use a fraction of the energy a cabin blower needs. Use them instead. If your commute is 60 km round-trip, a 250 km summer car still works in January. If you drive 180 km daily between Surrey and the North Shore, you need a 400+ km rated pack or a reliable workplace charger. Plan for the coldest week, not the average.
Charging reality: home, strata, and public
Level 1 (120 V wall outlet) adds 6–8 km per hour. Overnight gives 60–70 km — fine for a plug-in hybrid, marginal for a full EV. Level 2 (240 V, 32–40 A) adds 30–45 km per hour. Most owners install a 40 A unit on a 50 A breaker. Installation in a detached home runs $1,200–$2,500 including permit. Strata buildings often require an electrical capacity study and board approval; budget three to six months for the process.
Public DC fast charging (50–350 kW) charges 10–80% in 20–45 minutes on modern cars. Older EVs (pre-2020) often peak at 50 kW regardless of the station. Check the car's maximum DC rate before assuming a 350 kW station will be fast. BC Hydro and Flo networks cover major corridors; the ChargePoint app shows real-time availability. Carry a CCS adapter if the car uses CHAdeMO — the network is shrinking.
Hidden costs that appear after purchase
Tires wear faster on EVs. Instant torque and 400+ kg of battery mass chew through rear tires 20–30% quicker than an equivalent gas car. Budget $1,200–$1,800 for a set every 35,000–45,000 km. Brake pads last longer — regenerative braking handles most deceleration — but calipers seize from disuse. Exercise them with hard stops monthly.
Coolant changes are real. Battery thermal-management fluid degrades. Most manufacturers specify a 4–5 year interval; the job runs $250–$400 at an independent shop. Cabin air filters clog faster because the climate system runs more often. Replace annually.
What a multi-point inspection covers on an EV
A standard used-car inspection misses EV-specific items. The lift should come up for: coolant leak check at the battery pack seams, high-voltage cable insulation integrity, charge-port pin condition, and inverter/converter coolant level. The scan tool must read battery management system fault history — not just current codes, but permanent codes that clear only after a drive cycle. A cleared code with no recent drive cycles suggests someone erased a problem before appraisal.
Ask for the auction sheet or service history showing the last DC fast-charge count. A car with 400+ fast-charge sessions on a 60 kWh pack has seen more thermal stress than one with 50 sessions, even at the same state-of-health percentage.
Financing and trade-in notes for EV buyers
Lenders treat EVs like any used vehicle — loan-to-value is based on book value, not replacement cost. Some credit unions offer 0.25–0.5% rate discounts for EV purchases; ask before signing dealer-arranged financing. If you are trading a gas vehicle, the appraisal process is identical.
